Notice: All BCI records are confidential Law-Enforcement Documents. However, these records can be released as follows:

By Mail: You have the option to mail the request, but must provide the following:

A signed and notarized release for information
A copy of photo identification attached to release (one of the following)
o State Issued Driver’s License
o State Issued Identification Card
o Passport
Check or money order (NO CASH) for $5.00 payable to BCI
A self-addressed stamped envelope for return

PLEASE ALLOW 7 BUSINESS DAYS FOR RETURN

In Person: At BCI desk: Probably the quickest option to appear in person with the following documentation:

Photo Identification (one of the following)
o State Issued Driver’s License
o State Issued Identification Card
o Passport
Check or money order (NO CASH) for $5.00 payable to BCI
For Third Party: The Superintendent’s Office can request processing of background checks for volunteers/chaperones, etc. In order to do so, you must complete the Authorization, Release & Waiver form which must be notarized. This form authorizes the school department to run the background check on your behalf. To that form, you must attach a check or money order for $5.00 made payable to “BCI” (no cash is accepted), and a legible copy of one of the listed acceptable forms of ID. The complete package should be returned to the office of your child’s school who will then forward to the Superintendent’s Office. These clearances will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s office weekly, on Fridays. Please understand that due to the volume this may be the slowest way for the results to be returned – possibly more than seven (7) business days.

Authorization, Release, and Waiver form (signed and notarized)
Attached copy of photo identification (one of the following)
o State Issued Driver’s License
o State Issued Identification Card
o Passport
Check or money order (NO CASH) for $5.00 payable to BCI
The district will provide the self-addressed stamped envelope as the results will be returned to us.
The Investigations Unit was established by the General Assembly in 1987, R.I. Gen L. §42-9-8.1. Investigators within the unit are law enforcement officers who assist attorneys in carrying out investigations relating to grand jury matters, pretrial preparation and other litigation efforts. In addition, the unit investigates violation of the sex offender registration laws, coordinates enforcement of child abuse laws, assists in the apprehension of so-called “deadbeat parents,” and assists generally in the investigative efforts of other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies.

We hope the information provided above is helpful to you and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this change has caused. Please know that neither the School Department nor the Police Department had any control regarding this change in procedure.

Should you have any questions regarding the above information, please contact the school office.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Barnes
Superintendent
